The Empordà Museum, located in the centre of Figueres, capital of Alt Empordà, houses one of the region's main art collections.

Created in 1946, its collections date from the end of the 19th century and come from donations bequeathed by important figures from the city, as well as from the holdings of Madrid's Prado Museum. The present-day building was constructed in 1971 and contains pieces of archaeology, history and art of the city and region, thanks to an important donation made by the collector Frederic Marès.

In 1998 the Empordà Museum Consortium was created by Figueres City Council and Alt Empordà County Council, coinciding with the renovation of the permanent collection. The museum today offers visitors a historical reading of its collections and also focuses on contemporary art.
